Jimmy Carter was an extraordinary human being.

As a Nobel Peace Prize winner, U.S. navy veteran, state senator, Governor of Georgia, and 39th President of the United States, President Carter has certainly secured his place in the history books.

But it is his humanitarian efforts that were most remarkable. A quiet but tenacious advocate for peace and dignity for of all of humankind, President Carter led by example and continued to shape the world long after his presidency came to end.

As a diplomatic figure, he committed his life to the alleviation of human suffering through the Carter Center, a non-profit dedicated to preventing and resolving global conflicts. Among his many initiatives was that of advancing democracy and human rights throughout the world.

His leadership on the global stage is only eclipsed by his enduring, 77-year marriage to the late First-Lady Rosalyn Smith Carter, and his role as father of 4, grandfather to 11, and great-grandfather to 14 great-grandchildren.

President Carter was amongst the best of us. We are grateful for his impact across the world and his dedication to leave the planet better off than when he entered it 100 years ago.

The Alabama Democratic Party expresses our deepest sympathy to his family and friends on their immense loss.
