As indicated in the Delegate Selection Plan adopted by the Alabama Democratic Party, when Uncommitted reaches a vote threshold of 15% statewide or in a Congressional district, the Party must include a percentage of Uncommitted delegates in the State Delegation to the Democratic National Convention. Qualifying to Become a Delegate
Unfortunately, the qualifying period to run for Delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina has closed. We still encourage you to attend the Convention, and join Democrats from around the country as we re-nominate President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden for their second term in the White House! When is the Convention?
The 2012 Democratic National Convention is from September 3-6.
How many Delegates are there in Alabama?
Each Congressional district has a set number of elected delegate slots alloted based on how well the district voted for President Obama in 2008. The top male and female delegate candidates who do the best in each Congressional district are elected, alternating between male and female, until all of the slots in that district are filled. Candidates who are unsuccessful at the ballot box can apply to be considered as an at-large or alternate deldgate by the State Democratic Executive Committee.
There are 41 total district-level, elected delegates.
CD 1: 5 delegates; 2 males & 3 females
CD 2: 6 delegates; 3 males & 3 females
CD 3: 6 delegates; 3 males & 3 females
CD 4: 4 delegates; 2 males & 2 females
CD 5: 6 delegates; 3 males & 3 females
CD 6: 5 delegates; 3 males & 2 females
CD 7: 9 delegates; 4 males & 5 females
Are delegates responsible for their travel expenses to the Convention?
Yes, unfortunately we are unable to provide financial assistance for individuals who are elected to serve as delegates to the National Convention. Please take into consideration the costs of travel, lodging, and food for the convention dates when deciding to qualify to run. How are At-Large and Alternate Delegates selected?
At-Large and Alternate Delegates will be elected by the State Democratic Executive Committee on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 10:00 AM in Montgomery. Alabama's delegation will include 14 at-large delegates and 5 alternates. Any Democrat--including those who ran at the district level and were defeated--may qualify and stand for election as an at-large or alternate delegate. You need not be a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee. The deadline to qualify as an at-large or alternate delegate is 5:00 PM on Thursday, April 12, 2012. The process is described in our 2012 Delegate Selection Plan, which has been found in compliance by the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee and is available on-line.
