Alabama Democrats lost their unofficial goodwill ambassador this week, when Ruth Johnson Owens, or "Miss Ruthie" as we all knew her, passed away surrounded by her loving family.
Miss Ruthie served for nearly 50 years on the State Democratic Executive Committee of Alabama, for 16 years on the Democratic National Committee, and for 12 years on the Democratic National Committee's Executive Committee. Her service, her personality, and her loyalty to the Democratic Party allowed her to be known and loved by many across the country.
Just two weeks ago I spent some time with Ruthie's daughter, Sylvia, looking through a stack of amazing photos of Miss Ruthie with Presidents, Senators, Governors, and Congressmen. She truly lived an extraordinary life and she was a Yellow Dog Democrat until the end. She will be greatly missed.
Well wishers may visit with Miss Ruthie's family tomorrow, Wednesday August 17th from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City.
