Judge Mark Kennedy and wife Peggy Kennedy announced today that they would be starting the Alabama Flag Project, a service to ensure soldiers serving in combat zones overseas would be provided with Alabama flags upon request.
The Kennedys, whose son Captain Leigh Kennedy is currently serving in the Army in Afghanistan, announced the project in the wake of a Birmingham News article on the denial of a flag request to a soldier serving overseas.
“We commend the Governor for his decision to change this incredibly insensitive policy,” said Judge Kennedy, a former Alabama Supreme Court Justice. “But as the proud parents of a soldier currently serving our country in Afghanistan, we would like to do what we can as well to ensure every soldier who requests a flag is able to receive one.”
The Kennedys are requesting that Alabamians send donations of flags and funds for postage to the Alabama Flag Project, PO Box 5202, Montgomery 36103.
